Rain threat looms over Pakistan-India women’s World Cup clash today
The high-octane Pakistan-India encounter in the ICC Women’s World Cup, scheduled to take place today (Sunday) in Colombo, faces the threat of rain disruptions.
According to forecasts, showers are expected before the start of the match and are likely to continue intermittently throughout the day.
Reports also suggest the possibility of both light and heavy rain during the game. The match is scheduled to start at 2.30pm Pakistan time.
Persistent rain in Colombo has already caused the abandonment of the Sri Lanka vs Australia fixture on Friday.
Pakistan and India will face off at the R. Premadasa Stadium, with Pakistan seeking redemption after a loss to Bangladesh in their tournament opener.
In contrast, India will enter the match with confidence, having defeated Sri Lanka in their first game.
The Pakistan women’s cricketers had to cancel their training session scheduled for Saturday due to inclement weather.
Nevertheless, the squad held intensive indoor training sessions at the Gamini Dissanayake Indoor Nets, focusing on batting, bowling, and physical fitness under the supervision of head coach Mohammad Wasim and other coaching staff.
Speaking ahead of the World Cup showdown, captain Fatima Sana insisted her side will do their best to not only handle the high-pressure scenario but thrive.
“We know that when it’s India versus Pakistan, the whole world is watching, and the fans are watching too,” she said.
“So yes, there is pressure, but the main thing is how we handle it. We’ll try to focus on our game, execute our plans, and play the way we’ve prepared.”
The Pakistan team lost to Bangladesh in their opening match of the ICC World Cup in Colombo.
Pakistan are hoping to quickly put their first-up performance in the rear-view mirror. They suffered a seven-wicket loss to Bangladesh on the third day of the tournament to commence their campaign on the back foot.
“The coaches have told us to believe in our team, because the whole tournament is still left,” she continued.
“You can’t define a team by one match, and one bad day can’t define a team. Obviously, we have belief we can still do it. We will try to perform well. The way we played in the qualifiers and other matches, we performed very well as a team. So we can’t think that one bad game defines us. Personally, I feel the Pakistan team has the ability to play well and win against any big team. So we shouldn’t judge the team based on one match.
“The team’s momentum and morale are high right now, and we just want to tell the fans — don’t judge us on one performance. Support us, and we’ll try to perform our best.”
In One Day Internationals, history favours India as India won all 11 previous contests. ers.
The two teams last met on March 6, 2022, during the Women’s World Cup in New Zealand, where India achieved a comfortable 107-run victory.
