PTI activist Falak Javed’s physical remand extended in anti-state tweet case
A Lahore judicial magistrate on Tuesday extended the physical remand of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) social media activist Falak Javed for four more days in a case related to alleged anti-state tweets and uploading an objectionable image of Punjab Information Minister Uzma Bukhari.
Falak Javed was produced before Judicial Magistrate Naeem Wattoo by the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) after completing her initial five-day physical remand.
The NCCIA sought additional time to investigate, while the court granted the request and directed the agency to submit a detailed report on the next hearing.
Earlier on Monday, Lahore’s sessions court dismissed an appeal filed by Javed against her physical remand.
Additional Sessions Judge upheld the magistrate’s earlier order, ruling it lawful and rejecting the defence’s argument that such remand was excessive and comparable only to cases of heinous crimes like murder or dacoity.
Javed’s counsel, Advocate Mian Ali Ashfaq, had argued that investigators were misusing the process, while the NCCIA prosecutor countered that the custody was essential for questioning the accused and conducting forensic analysis of her mobile phone.
Falak Javed was arrested last week in Islamabad’s Sector F-10 after what officials described as 16 months in hiding.
She was initially remanded into NCCIA custody for five days after prosecutors sought a 30-day remand.
The activist faces charges under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) for allegedly posting anti-state material and derogatory remarks against Uzma Bukhari, who is the complainant in the case.
Javed is also the sister of PTI activist Sanam Javed, who has faced multiple cases.
