No extension in income tax returns deadline: FBR

Tax authority urges taxpayers to file by Sept 30, warns of penalties for late filers

The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) on Monday categorically denied reports suggesting an extension in the deadline for filing income tax returns for the tax year 2025.

In a statement, the FBR said it had taken notice of “false and misleading” reports circulating on media platforms, clarifying that the last date for filing returns remains September 30, 2025.

Some reports had linked the supposed extension to the recent floods, but the tax authority dismissed the claim, stating that the “vast majority of taxpayers live in unaffected areas and have had ample time to fulfill their national obligation.”

The FBR also rejected suggestions that its online filing portal, IRIS, was slowing down. “IRIS is fully operational and functioning smoothly,” the board said, adding that returns can be filed conveniently using the new simplified form.

Taxpayers were reminded that failure to meet the deadline would result in late-filer status and penalties under the law.

However, in cases of extreme hardship, individuals may apply for a 15-day extension provided due taxes are paid by September 30 and approval is granted by the relevant committee.

The board urged all eligible taxpayers to file “accurately, honestly, and on time” to avoid legal consequences.
