PM Shehbaz Sharif calls meeting with President Trump productive
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif described his meeting with US President Donald Trump as both pleasant and productive, emphasising that it signifies a new chapter in Pakistan-US relations. He highlighted the US President’s commitment to fostering economic cooperation with Pakistan.
In a press conference held in London, the Prime Minister reported that his recent trips to New York and Washington were successful, enabling open discussions on critical issues such as Gaza, Kashmir, the economy, and bilateral relations.
Sharif noted that the meeting with President Trump, attended by leaders from Arab and Islamic nations, yielded encouraging outcomes regarding the situation in Gaza, expressing optimism for positive developments in the near future.
He stressed the urgent need to end “the atrocities ongoing in Gaza since 2023,” condemning the unprecedented violence against Muslims. He reaffirmed Pakistan’s strong solidarity with the Palestinian people during the General Assembly and reiterated the country’s firm stance on Kashmir.
The Prime Minister pointed out that India suffered a significant defeat in the “Battle of Truth,” recognizing the sacrifices made by the Pakistan Armed Forces, which he believes will be remembered in history. He further commended the historic achievements under the leadership of Field Marshal Asim Munir, asserting that the nation stands united with its armed forces. Sharif also reiterated that Pakistan’s nuclear capability is intended solely for defense.
During his meeting with President Trump, discussions encompassed trade, investment, IT, agriculture, minerals, energy, and other areas of collaboration. The US President assured further expansion of trade relations with Pakistan.
Sharif expressed gratitude to Trump for facilitating a ceasefire between Pakistan and India, which he noted helped avert significant losses that could have arisen from prolonged conflict. He revealed that the Pakistani nation has nominated President Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize in recognition of his peace-promoting efforts.
The Prime Minister emphasised his ongoing consultations with Field Marshal Asim Munir on various issues, including war, foreign policy, and the economy, indicating their sincere work towards national progress. He stated that with continued cooperation, Pakistan will reach new heights.
In addressing terrorism, Sharif mentioned the previous government’s missteps in releasing and resettling terrorists, which contributed to ongoing challenges. He reaffirmed the commitment of the Pakistan Army and law enforcement agencies to combat terrorism, honoring their sacrifices.
He also discussed a new defense agreement with Saudi Arabia, clarifying that it is not aimed at any specific adversary but reflects the mutual aspirations of both nations. He emphasised the historic and brotherly relationship between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia, pledging to protect the holy sites at any cost.
Regarding the devastating floods in 2022, the Prime Minister noted the significant damage caused in Sindh and Punjab, which affected thousands of villages and resulted in numerous casualties. He assured that the government is assessing the situation, but the spirit of the nation remains resilient, and Pakistan will overcome this crisis.
Concluding his remarks, Sharif stated that “Pakistan’s economy has achieved fundamental stability,” and efforts are ongoing to ensure sustainable growth. He expressed pride in the warm reception received in Saudi Arabia, reflecting the strong ties between the two countries and the pride it brings to the 240 million people of Pakistan.
