Trump optimistic about Middle East peace plan amid Gaza conflict
US President Donald Trump expressed optimism on Sunday regarding his proposal to end the war in Gaza, stating he has received a “very good response” ahead of his meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday.
In a telephone interview with Reuters, Trump noted that US special envoy Steve Witkoff and his son-in-law, Jared Kushner, have been in discussions with Netanyahu in New York prior to their White House meeting.
“We’re getting a very good response because Bibi wants to make the deal too,” Trump said, using Netanyahu’s nickname. He emphasised that “everybody wants to make the deal.”
This week, as international leaders convened at the United Nations, the US unveiled a 21-point Middle East peace plan aimed at resolving the nearly two-year-long conflict between Israel and Hamas.
The plan includes provisions for the return of all hostages, a cessation of Israeli attacks on Qatar, and renewed dialogue between Israel and Palestinians for “peaceful coexistence,” according to a White House official.
A Hamas representative noted on Saturday that the group had not yet seen the US plan presented at the UN. Trump credited leaders from Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, and Jordan for their support in the peace process, asserting that the deal would not only resolve the Gaza conflict but also contribute to broader peace in the Middle East.
“Everybody’s involved,” he said. “Everybody wants it, and Hamas wants it, and one of the reasons is because everybody’s tired” of war.
While Trump did not disclose specific details about a potential ceasefire-for-hostages agreement, Vice President JD Vance told “Fox News Sunday” that US officials are engaged in “very complicated” negotiations with Israeli and Arab leaders.
Netanyahu, in an interview on Fox News Channel’s “The Sunday Briefing,” suggested that amnesty for Hamas leaders could be part of the agreement. “If Hamas leaders are escorted out of the country, yeah, if they finish the war and release all the hostages, we let them out,” he stated.
Vance described himself as “cautiously hopeful” about reaching a deal, expressing optimism about the current state of negotiations compared to previous months.
He outlined the plan’s three main components: returning all hostages, neutralizing the Hamas threat to Israel, and increasing humanitarian aid in Gaza. “I think we’re close to accomplishing all three of those objectives,” Vance said.
