Karachi’s extortion crisis: JDC head Zafar Abbas targeted with ransom threats
In Karachi, extortion cases are surging again, with the latest victim being a prominent social figure and head of Jaffaria Disaster Management Cell Foundation (JDC) Zafar Abbas.
The police have registered a case at the Tipu Sultan Police station following reports of a substantial ransom demand and threats to his life.
According to the FIR, the incident took place on September 25. The complainant Daniyal Haider was in an office with Zafar Abbas when Zafar received a call on his personal phone. The anonymous caller ordered him to meet at a private hotel on Shahrah-e-Faisal at 3pm.
Upon his arrival at the hotel, Zafar Abbas found three individuals who demanded a monthly ransom of Rs140 million, warning that failure to comply would result in his murder. The suspects identified in the case include Mahmood Akhtar, Mohsin Wasti, Yawar Sai and Manzar Kazmi.
Following the registration of case, police have transferred the investigation to the CIA for a thorough inquiry into this serious extortion incident.
Authorities have confirmed that the investigation is ongoing, with raids being conducted to apprehend the suspects.
In light of these threats against Zafar Abbas, social circles have voiced their concerns, urging the government to take immediate and stringent actions to ensure safety.
