Iran, Russia sign $25bn deal to build four nuclear power plants
Iran has signed a $25 billion agreement with Russia’s state nuclear corporation Rosatom to build four nuclear power plants in the country, state news agency IRNA reported on Friday.
Rosatom had earlier confirmed signing a memorandum of understanding with Iran on the construction of small-scale nuclear power plants, but did not provide details on the number.
The deal was finalised during the World Atom Week (WAW) 2025 Atom Expo in Moscow, where an Iranian delegation led by Atomic Energy Organisation of Iran (AEOI) chief Mohamad Eslami took part.
According to AEOI spokesperson Behrouz Kamalvandi, Iran and Russia concluded negotiations for five power plants larger than Bushehr, including four units with a combined capacity of nearly 5,000 megawatts to be built in southern Iran. Each plant will generate about 1,200 megawatts.
“The trip was multi-purpose; it included participation in this important international summit, a policy speech by Mr. Eslami, and the pursuit of deeper cooperation with Russia across the nuclear field,” Kamalvandi said.
He praised Russia’s role in the Bushehr Power Plant project, noting that the facility fully complies with international standards.
High-profile nuclear gathering in Moscow
World Atom Week 2025, coinciding with the 80th anniversary of Russia’s nuclear industry, is the largest global forum for the sector.
The event was addressed by President Vladimir Putin, and attended by IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi, who also held talks with the Russian president.
Iran also showcased its latest nuclear achievements at a dedicated pavilion, open from September 25 to 28, attracting international delegates and industry experts.
