Falak Javed’s five-day remand challenged in Lahore court
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) social media activist Falak Javed on Friday challenged a lower court’s decision to hand her over to the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) on a five-day physical remand.
Judicial Magistrate Mohammad Naeem Wattoo had earlier approved Javed’s remand on Thursday after prosecutors sought a 30-day custody, arguing that she had evaded arrest despite 36 raids at her residence.
The prosecution maintained that her mobile phone was required for forensic analysis.
The remand order was taken to the sessions court, where Javed’s counsel argued that the magistrate’s decision was unlawful and comparable only to cases of heinous crimes such as murder or dacoity.
Her lawyer requested that the remand be declared void.
Additional Sessions Judge heard the petition, sought the case record from the NCCIA, and directed both Punjab Information Minister Uzma Bukhari — the complainant — and the investigating officer to submit their replies by Saturday. The court adjourned the hearing until then.
Falak Javed, who was arrested late Tuesday night in Islamabad’s Sector F-10 after reportedly remaining in hiding for 16 months, has been accused of posting anti-state material and using derogatory language against provincial minister Bukhari.
She faces charges under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) for allegedly running an online campaign targeting state institutions.
She is the sister of PTI activist Sanam Javed, who has also faced multiple political cases.
