An international aid flotilla is scheduled to leave Greek waters for Gaza on Friday, defying Israeli warnings that it will take measures to prevent the boats from reaching the war-torn enclave.

Organized by the Global Sumud Flotilla, around 50 civilian vessels aim to break Israel’s naval blockade of Gaza, a move that has drawn strong opposition from Israeli authorities. The flotilla includes prominent figures such as Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg, along with lawyers, parliamentarians, and activists.

Tensions have escalated as the flotilla reported being targeted by drones earlier this week, though no injuries occurred. In response, Italy and Spain have dispatched naval ships to assist their citizens involved in the mission. While Greece has pledged to ensure the flotilla’s safe passage in its waters, the launch will take the boats into international waters in the eastern Mediterranean, with organizers hoping to arrive by early next week.

Thunberg emphasized the flotilla’s mission, stating, “We are not just delivering humanitarian aid. We are trying to deliver hope and solidarity, to send a strong message that the world stands with Palestine.”

In contrast, Israel has declared that the flotilla will not succeed and accused it of aiding Hamas. The Israeli foreign ministry did not directly address the drone attack claims but suggested the flotilla could drop humanitarian aid for Israel to deliver to Gaza, warning of consequences if it proceeds.

The exact timing of the flotilla’s departure remains uncertain, as organizers reported that one of the lead boats experienced a mechanical failure.

Italy has cautioned its citizens against continuing with the mission, offering assistance for repatriation if they choose to disembark in Greece. The Italian navy ship deployed for the operation will only engage in rescue or humanitarian efforts and will not participate in military actions. The Italian foreign ministry warned that those who continue with the mission will assume all associated risks.

The backdrop of this flotilla is Israel’s ongoing military campaign in Gaza, initiated in response to the October 7, 2023, attacks by Hamas that resulted in significant casualties. Since then, the Israeli offensive has reportedly killed over 65,000 Palestinians, destroyed much of the infrastructure, and displaced countless individuals, leading to dire humanitarian conditions in the region.
