Floods affect 4.7 million people across Punjab, 186 killed
The Punjab Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has released a report on damages caused by floods in rivers Ravi, Sutlej and Chenab.
According to the report, 27 districts in Punjab were affected, with over 4,700 villages damaged. At least 186 people lost their lives in different incidents, while more than 4.7 million people were affected.
Authorities set up 300 medical camps, 271 relief camps and 283 veterinary camps in affected districts. Around 2.6 million people and 2.1 million livestock were shifted to safer areas. Citizens in relief camps are being provided food and basic facilities.
The relief commissioner said compensation for losses would be ensured as per the chief minister’s instructions, with a survey beginning on September 24.
DG PDMA Irfan Ali Kathia said water flow in Punjab’s rivers has returned to normal, with a clear decline in flood levels. However, a medium to low-level flood situation persists in the Sutlej River, where water flow was recorded at 83,000 cusecs at Ganda Singh Wala and 81,000 cusecs at Sulemanki.
In the Chenab River, water flow was recorded at 36,000 cusecs at Marala, 29,000 cusecs at Khanki, 25,000 cusecs at Qadirabad, 31,000 cusecs at Trimmu and 111,000 cusecs at Panjnad. The Ravi River’s flow was recorded at 6,000 cusecs at Jassar, 5,000 cusecs at Shahdara, 24,000 cusecs at Balloki and 26,000 cusecs at Sidhnai.
