Oscar-winning director Martin Scorsese is set to helm an adaptation of the ghost story novel “What Happens at Night”, featuring Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence in lead roles.

According to Variety, Apple Original firms is reportedly in negotiations to finance and produce the project in collaboration with Studiocanal, which acquired the rights to Peter Cameron’s acclaimed novel in 2023.

Scorsese will produce the film, with the screenplay adapted by Patrick Marber. The story follows an American couple who journey to mysterious, snowy European city to adopt a baby. The plot reveals that the wife, battling cancer, faces a difficult journey that leaves her weak, while her husband fears her illness may hinder their adoption.

While Scorsese and DiCaprio have collaborated on six features films over two decades, What Happens at Night will mark the director’s first time working with Lawrence, though he produced her upcoming film Die My Love directed by Lynne Ramsay.

Lawrence’s performance in that film has already generated Oscar buzz following its debut at Cannes 2025.

Film “What Happens at Night” is set to be released in theatres this fall. Meanwhile, DiCaprio is receiving acclaim for his role in Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another, which will open the Gallas section of the 9th Pingyao International Film Festival, running from September 24 to 30.

The film features a group of former revolutionaries reuniting after 16years to confront a re-emerged enemy. DiCaprio and Lawrence previously appeared together in the 2021 apocalyptic dramedy “Don’t Look Up”, directed by Adam Mckay.
