FBR decides to take action against tax evaders
The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has collected data on more than 57,000 jewellers as part of its efforts to take action against tax evasion.
Sources claim that most jewellers underreport their income to avoid paying due taxes.
Out of the 57,000 jewellers, only 21,000 are registered with the FBR, and just 10,524 have filed tax returns.
In the first phase, a list of jewellers from Lahore, Rawalpindi, Faisalabad, and Multan has been prepared, and notices are being issued to them seeking explanations.
FBR sources say many jewellers’ declared incomes do not match the scale of their businesses, shops, transactions, or lifestyle.
Thousands of businesses are not even part of the tax net. Jewellers who are paying less tax than expected are being asked to respond through formal notices.
FBR officials stated that all sectors are being brought into the tax net, and no businessman or industrialist will be served a notice without cause.
They emphasised: “If every individual pays their fair share of taxes honestly, the country will function properly.”
