Punjab launches Pakistan’s first AI-based driving test car

No more bribery or favouritism — only skilled drivers to get licences

In a groundbreaking step to reform the licensing system, Punjab Police has introduced Pakistan’s first Artificial Intelligence-based driving test car, eliminating the scope of favoritism or bribery.

Only those capable of driving will now be able to obtain a license, officials announced.

The smart vehicle is equipped with five cameras — four outside (front, sides, and rear) and one inside — to monitor candidates during the test.

A biometric machine installed inside the car verifies fingerprints before the test begins.

Candidates will receive automated instructions as soon as they sit inside.

A three-minute countdown marks the start of the test. The AI system automatically evaluates driving performance, for instance, if a candidate uses reverse gear more than once, the car will immediately mark the test as failed.

At the end of the test, the system generates an automated result printout detailing the candidate’s mistakes.

The vehicle is also fitted with a GPS system, and no one other than the applicant is allowed inside during the assessment.

DIG Traffic Punjab, Waqas Nazir, said that as soon as a candidate enters the car, biometric verification is carried out, after which the driving test starts under the AI system.

He added that Punjab Traffic Police will roll out 200 AI-based vehicles across licensing centers in the province this year.
