Uncertainty looms as PCB yet to confirm participation in Asia Cup
Uncertainty loomed ahead of Pakistan’s match with the UAE in the Asia Cup on Wednesday as a decision by the Pakistan Cricket Board to participate in the tournament was being awaited.
According to sources, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has accepted Pakistan’s demand, and Andy Pycroft will not be appointed as match referee in Pakistan’s remaining matches in the ongoing Asia Cup.
The PCB had maintained that Andy Pycroft’s conduct during the match against India was inappropriate and against the spirit of the game, particularly his instructions to skip the traditional handshake at the toss.
A PCB source said that consultations with senior government officials were still going on, and a decision will be made keeping Pakistan’s national interest in mind.
The scheduled pre-match press conference by the Pakistan captain ahead of the team’s match against the UAE has been cancelled.
Some media reports claimed that Pakistan will continue its participation in the Asia Cup, and Andy Pycroft will be replaced by Richie Richardson as the match referee for Pakistan’s games.
The Green Shirts are scheduled to play against the United Arab Emirates (UAE) today (Wednesday) in a bid to qualify for the Super Four stage of the Asia Cup.
Although no official statement has been made about whether Pakistan will play or pull out of the tournament, one possible resolution being considered is the removal of Andy Pycroft from officiating Pakistan’s matches.
Meanwhile, the Pakistani team held a three-hour training session at the ICC Academy in Dubai on Tuesday.
During the Pakistan team’s practice, the Indian team was also training on a nearby ground, but no interactions took place between the two sides.
