Washington approves $1 billion in arms for Kyiv through NATO-backed mechanism
The Trump administration has approved its first US weapons package for Ukraine, with shipments expected soon under a new financing arrangement with NATO allies, two sources told Reuters.
The mechanism is known as the Prioritised Ukraine Requirements List (PURL), which allows allied funds to be used for weapons drawn from US stock piles.
Undersecretary of Defence for Policy Elbridge Colby has signed off on up to two $500 million packages, the sources said, part of a broader plan that could channel as much as $10 billion in arms to Kyiv.
The renewed transatlantic effort comes as President Donald Trump, frustrated by Moscow’s ongoing attacks despite his push for a negotiated settlement, looks to reinforce Ukraine’s defenses. Until now, the administration has only pursued direct sales or shipments approved under former President Joe Biden.
Although officials declined to specify the inventory, the packages are said to include urgently needed air defence systems, vital as Ukraine faces escalating Russian drone and missile strikes. According to one source, the PURL list is now moving through Pentagon channels.
“It’s the stuff they’ve been asking for a lot of stuff”, the source noted. “It’s the flow that allowed them to stabilise the lines thus far”.
According to the analysts, Ukraine’s requests remain consistent: air defences, interceptors, rocket systems and artillery.
The Pentagon has not yet commented on the approvals.
