Flood disaster in Punjab: 97 dead, 4,500 villages submerged
The recent floods have affected nearly 4.5 million people across Punjab, damaging more than 4,500 villages and claiming 97 lives, according to the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA).
The PDMA report highlighted extensive destruction caused by flooding in the Ravi, Sutlej, and Chenab rivers.
Authorities said that 2.45 million people were evacuated to safe locations, while 396 relief camps and 490 medical camps were established in affected districts.
In addition, 405 veterinary camps were set up for livestock care, with rescue teams moving more than 1.9 million animals to safer areas.
Relief Commissioner Punjab noted that major reservoirs are near full capacity, with Mangla Dam at 93% and Tarbela Dam at 100%.
Across the border, India’s Bhakra Dam is 88% full, Pong Dam 94%, and Thein Dam 89%, raising concerns of further downstream pressure.
The PDMA warned that the situation remains critical, urging continued vigilance and coordinated relief efforts as floodwaters persist in parts of the province.
