After wreaking havoc across South Punjab, the flood has now entered Sindh, triggering rising water levels in the Indus River and sparking fears of further devastation in low-lying areas.

In Naushahro Feroze, the Indus River’s water level has begun to rise rapidly. At Guddu Barrage, inflows reached 502,844 cusecs with an outflow of 492,433 cusecs.

Sukkur Barrage is also witnessing a surge, recording 404,405 cusecs upstream and 382,000 cusecs downstream, categorised as a low-level flood.

At Kotri Barrage, inflows were measured at 253,145 cusecs, while Head Panjnad registered an exceptionally high flood with levels exceeding 475,000 cusecs.

Sukkur Deputy Mayor Dr Arshad Mughal said water levels at Guddu and Sukkur barrages were rising continuously, but assured that full protective measures had been taken in Sukkur city and around the barrage.

“We are hopeful the flood surge will pass without causing serious damage,” he added.

In Naushahro Feroze, the rising Indus burst through an embankment near Manjath, flooding Ali Mardan Chandio village.

More than 15 houses in the village were marooned, while hundreds of acres of standing crops were destroyed.

Residents trapped by floodwaters have appealed to the administration for immediate rescue and relocation to safe areas.

Sindh lashed by fresh monsoon spell

Meanwhile, heavy monsoon rains have worsened the crisis across Sindh.

In Hyderabad, urban flooding paralysed life, leaving several neighbourhoods submerged. Drainage has yet to be completed in Latifabad No. 2 and No. 11, while Qasimabad Phase 1, Citizen Colony, Gulistan Sajjad, Sehrish Nagar, Railway Colony, Railway Station, Qadam Gah Mola Ali and Klat Market remain inundated.

Power breakdowns further slowed dewatering operations.

In Sehwan Sharif, intermittent rains for the third consecutive day submerged low-lying areas, destroying onion and cotton crops. Flash floods from the hills caused overflowing streams, cutting off Jhankara’s road link with Sehwan for three days.

Dadu city and adjoining areas also faced relentless downpours. Flooded streams in the Kirthar range drowned dozens of villages, while surging waters swept away a section of the Chhini Bridge, severing road links between Kachho villages and Dadu-Johi.

In Ubauro, a few hours of rain left the main Subhan Allah Market underwater, disrupting business. Two days on, drainage work remained incomplete.

In Sujawal district, the powerful monsoon spell wreaked havoc as overflowing drains submerged dozens of villages. Entire tehsils of Sujawal, Jati, Shah Bandar and Mirpur Bathoro were engulfed, while in Rawal Kundra village, a drain breach drowned dozens of homes.

Bilawal reviews flood defences

Pakistan Peoples Party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari visited the Moria Loop Bund in Larkana to review flood defences along the Indus.

He was briefed by irrigation officials in the presence of MPA Jameel Ahmad Soomro and the Larkana mayor.

Later, Bilawal offered condolences to the family of the late veteran politician Mumtaz Bhutto at Dhesar House in Mirpur Bhutto and prayed for the departed soul.
