Karachi rain update: Surjani Town records 130mm as Met Office forecasts more showers

Weather office says heavy clouds remain over western Karachi, with light to moderate rain expected till late at night

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has released detailed rainfall statistics for Karachi, covering the period from 11:00am on Monday to 8:00am Tuesday.

According to the data, Surjani Town received the heaviest downpour at 130 millimetres, followed by North Karachi with 72 mm and Korangi with 70 mm. Defence Phase 7 and Gulshan-e-Hadeed also recorded 70 mm and 69 mm, respectively.

Other notable figures include 55 mm at PAF Faisal Base, 54 mm in Nazimabad, 52 mm in Keamari, and 51 mm in Saadi Town.

Gulshan-e-Maymar received 48 mm, while Orangi Town and the old Airport area recorded 47 mm each.

Bahria Town registered 45 mm, University Road 44 mm, and PAF Masroor Base 41 mm. Jinnah Terminal saw the lowest rainfall at 30 mm.

Meanwhile, Sindh’s other districts also experienced significant rainfall. Thatta topped the list with 110 mm, followed by Padidan with 63 mm, Khairpur with 45 mm, Mithi with 19 mm, Chhor with 17 mm, and Sakrand with 16 mm.

Tharparkar received 15 mm, Rohri 14 mm, Sukkur 13 mm, while Larkana and Hyderabad recorded 11 mm each.

The Met Office said Karachi will continue to experience intermittent rain over the next 24 hours as a monsoon system, currently present in the form of a depression about 60 km west of the city, slowly weakens into a low-pressure area.

Heavy showers are likely in the western and southern parts of the metropolis by Tuesday afternoon, while light to moderate rainfall is expected to persist until late at night.

The system will also affect Jamshoro, Thatta, and Sujawal, though most other Sindh districts will remain hot and humid.

Karachi’s minimum temperature was recorded at 25°C, while the maximum is expected to range between 27°C and 29°C. Humidity stood at 92 per cent, with southeasterly winds blowing at 15 km/h.
