Two police officers were killed and two others wounded in a shooting attack at a police station near Izmir, Turkey.

A 16-year-old suspect has been arrested, according to Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya, on Monday.

The attack occurred at the police station in Balcova, a district just west of Izmir, leaving one officer seriously injured. Yerlikaya described the incident as a “heinous” act and confirmed that the suspect, identified as EB, was apprehended and is now under investigation.

Izmir Governor Suleyman Elban reported that the suspect lives on the same street as the police station and sustained injuries during his arrest. He noted that the teenager has no prior criminal record.

The motive for the attack remains unclear. Footage shared by the Gercek Gundem news site showed an individual in a balaclava carrying a rifle before entering the police station.

Other videos depicted the suspect being treated by paramedics and later placed in a police van.

According to reports, the assailant used a long-barreled weapon, possibly a pump-action shotgun. In response to the shooting, police implemented strict security measures in the area.

Izmir Mayor Cemil Tugay condemned the “treacherous” attack and expressed condolences to the victims’ families on social media.
