Field Marshal Asim Munir to remain army chief until Nov 2027: Rana Sanaullah
Adviser to the Prime Minister and senior Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Rana Sanaullah on Wednesday said that Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir will continue as Chief of Army Staff (COAS) until November 2027.
Speaking to a private TV channel, Sanaullah stated that under the amended law, there is no need for a fresh notification regarding the Air Chief either.
“The day his five-year tenure completes, he will retire,” he clarified.
The PML-N stalwart praised the incumbent Army Chief’s achievements, remarking, “Given the successes Field Marshal Asim Munir has delivered, no one is more deserving of an extension.”
He further said that the law provides for such extensions, recalling that in the past, military chiefs were granted extensions up to four times, while some even extended their own terms.
Sanaullah emphasised that all recent decisions have been made with the approval of PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif.
He categorically stated that the current National Assembly will continue its term until 2029, adding that the political agenda being pursued by the PTI founder “cannot succeed.”
Commenting on political reconciliation, Sanaullah said, “If the PTI founder wants to do politics from jail or outside, we are open to dialogue.”
However, he accused him of pushing for chaos: “Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has spoken about Pakistan’s stability, while the PTI founder seeks civil war. Should we allow that?”
Referring to the May 9 riots, he said the events were not a political protest but an attempt at civil war.
On broader governance issues, Rana Sanaullah said no discussion is taking place on the creation of new provinces, but deliberations are underway regarding changes in the National Finance Commission (NFC) Award.
He noted that the federal government is under financial strain, while provinces have more fiscal space, and efforts will be made to reach a consensus on this matter.
