What’s new in the iPhone 17 series?
Apple is set to unveil its most significant iPhone launch in years with the upcoming iPhone 17 line up expected to replace the current iPhone 16 family.
This new range will feature four models: the standard iPhone 17, the Pro, the Pro Max and a new ultra slim variant informally dubbed the “ iPhone 17 Air”.
The next special event will take place on Tuesday, September 9, at 10am Pacific time at the Steve Jobs Theatre. The event will likely be presented as a pre-recorded video introduced by CEO Tim Cook and is expected to showcase not only the new iPhone but also at least two new Apple Watch models and possibly new Air Pods.
Key upgrade for standard iPhone 17
The base iPhone 17 is rumoured to receive one of its significant upgrades in years, notably adopting a 120Hz display, a feature previously exclusive to Pro models.
The enhancement promises smoother scrolling and supports up to 120 frames per second in compatible apps. The display size will also increase to 6.27 inches, matching the iPhone 16Pro suggesting similar bezels for more screen space.
While the Pro models will retain titanium frames, the standard edition is expected to feature subtle design tweaks, including a new glass around a MagSafe charger and Apple logo, while maintaining its aluminium body for durability.
In an exciting development for casual users, the front facing camera is set for a major upgrade, moving from 12 megapixels to 24, which should enhance selfie quality significantly.
Charging capabilities will also improve with wired speeds increasing to 35W and potential wireless speeds reaching 50W under the new Qi 2.2 standard.
However, the standard iPhone 17 may be the only model to continue using last year’s A18 processor, potentially placing it behind its counterparts in performance. The innovative iPhone 17 Air
The iPhone 17 Air represents Apple’s boldest move this year, featuring a remarkable thickness of just 5.5mm, making it the slimmest iPhone to date. Despite its compact size, it will support a 6.6 inch display, offering more screen area than the base iPhone 17.
However, it is expected to include a smaller 2,900mAh battery, which may not last full day. To address this, Apple is reportedly developing a new smart battery case specifically for the Air.
The iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max are poised to showcase Apple’s top-tier technology, equipped with the new 3nm A19 Pro chip and 12GB of RAM an upgrade from the current 8GB. This combination is expected to support Apple’s increasing focus on artificial intelligence and resource-intensive applications.
To ensure the stable performance, the Pro models will reportedly introduce vapor chamber cooling for the first time. Additionally, there may be a shift from titanium back to aluminum frames for improved durability.
The photography enhancements are highlights of these models, with the telephoto lens upgraded from 12MP to 48MP, allowing up to 8x zoom. The Pro models will also feature the upgraded selfie camera, faster charging and potentially introduce reverse wireless charging.
The main distinction between the pro and Pro Max will likely be screen size and price, with the Pro featuring a 6.3 inch display and the Pro Max expanding to 6.9inches. Anticipation for the launch
Pre-orders for the iphone 17 are expected to begin on Friday, September 12, at 5am. Pacific time, following the announcement at keynote. Customers may prepare logging on to apple.com the night before to select their desired models and configurations.

Apple clearly placing significant confidence in the iPhone 17 line up to reignite consumer enthusiasm. With the Pro models showcasing advanced performance, the standard iPhone 17 receiving long-awaited upgrades and the Air attempting to carve out a new niche, the upcoming launch promises to be one of Apple’s most ambitious yet.
