PPP minister’s brother, others freed in assault case
All three suspects, including Farhan Ghani — brother of PPP minister Saeed Ghani — have been released from the police custody in the case of assaulting a government official.
Farhan Ghani’s lawyer, advocate Waqar Alam Abbasi, confirmed the release of all three suspects, sources said, adding that the release followed the withdrawal of the case by complainant Hafiz Suhail Ahmed Jadoon.
The complainant also submitted a written application to the investigating officer.
It is worth mentioning that a case had been registered at Karachi’s Ferozabad Police Station against Farhan Ghani, who serves as Chairman of Chanesar Town, along with several others.
Farhan Ghani was reportedly involved in a scuffle with a government official, and footage of the altercation had surfaced.
Complainant Hafiz Suhail Ahmed Jadoon had alleged that he was supervising optical fibre cable work when 20 to 25 individuals arrived at the scene and assaulted him.
The Anti-Terrorism Court had granted physical remand of the suspects until August 30. According to the police, the suspects were booked under the Anti-Terrorism Act.
Court issues notices
Meanwhile, the Karachi police on Saturday submitted a report to the anti-terror court regarding the release of Farhan Ghani and others.
The investigating officer (IO) and prosecutor appeared before the court.
According to the police report, the complainant failed to produce any No-Objection Certificate (NOC) related to the excavation work and could not establish his employment with any government department.
The report further stated that CCTV footage of the incident site could not be obtained, that the matter was essentially a personal dispute without the use of weapons, and that the complainant had so far failed to provide concrete evidence.
Police told the court that the complainant later visited the police station and declared he no longer wished to pursue the case.
Based on his statement and lack of evidence, the accused were released, the police stated.
During the proceedings, the investigating officer presented the release report, prompting the court to ask about the whereabouts of the accused and the complainant.
Defence counsel Waqar Alam informed the court that the complainant’s lawyer was present.
The court questioned the IO, saying: “Police granted relief to the accused. Did you take surety bonds or simply release them?”
The IO replied that sureties of Rs1 million were taken from the accused. Upon further questioning, the IO submitted a report regarding the surety bonds.
The court expressed displeasure over the report, noting that it mentioned the guarantor would produce the accused on the 30th, yet they had not been presented.
The judge remarked, “If the IO understood the law, the guarantor’s bail money would have been forfeited today.”
The court observed that it must examine whether the IO’s use of authority was within legal bounds, adding that a decision would be made in accordance with the law.
The court then issued notices to the accused and adjourned the hearing until September 2.
