Zelenskiy calls for clear security guarantees in peace talks with Russia
Ukrainian President Volodymr Zelenskiy emphasised the need for a need definition of security guarantees for Ukraine during a virtual meeting with European leaders .
This discussion is part of efforts to establish a peace settlement with Russia following over three years of conflict.
The meeting which included Polish President Karol Nawrocki and leaders from Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Denmark took place in Poland and came in the wake of a Russian attack on Kyiv that reportedly killed 22 people.
Zelenskiy stated that the leaders had “synchronised” their positions to increase pressure on Russia ahead of upcoming diplomatic discussions regarding the ongoing conflict which began with Russia’s invasion in February 2022. He expressed concern that Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin remains focused on prolonging the war.
Highlighting the need for robust security guarantees, Zelenskiy referenced discussions involving US President Donald Trump emphasising the importance of a united front in Europe to pressure Putin.
He called for clarity on who would assist Ukraine in defending its territory on land in the air and at sea if Russia were to escalate its aggression.
“It’s crucial that President Trump sees our unity in determination to end the war”, Zelenskiy remarked.
Trump has been working to arrange a meeting between Zelenskiy and Putin and has indicated he could impose new sanctions on Moscow if progress is not made towards resolving conflict.
The White House has expressed dissatisfaction with the recent Russian assault and senior Ukrainian officials are scheduled to meet with Trump administration representatives in New York on Friday.
