Speeding minibus kills three at Karachi’s Drigh Road underpass
Poor road conditions, coupled with reckless driving, claimed three lives in Karachi on Monday when a speeding minibus ran over two motorcycles at the Drigh Road underpass.
According to police, the accident occurred when the motorcycles slipped on mud left behind by recent rains, and the minibus following them rammed into the riders.
Three people, identified as 40-year-old Haris, Shoaib, and a 60-year-old woman, lost their lives on the spot.
A 30-year-old woman, Naila, sustained injuries and was shifted to the hospital along with the bodies of the deceased.
Police said the victims were riding on separate motorcycles when the bus struck them from behind.
The driver attempted to flee but was caught after a chase. His medical samples have been collected for testing.
Following the incident, the Traffic Accident Analysis Team visited the site, gathered evidence, and reviewed the conditions of the underpass, which was covered in mud and water due to recent rains.
Earlier, on August 22, the Sindh PDMA had claimed on its official account on “X” (formerly Twitter) that the drainage work at the Drigh Road underpass had been completed and traffic flow had returned to normal.
However, on the day of the accident, commuters found the underpass slippery and filled with mud, raising fresh questions over the performance of city authorities.
Karachi’s residents complain that the city’s roads and underpasses have long been in disrepair.
Storm drains are clogged with garbage, development projects remain incomplete, and several dug-up roads stand abandoned.
“Every rainfall leaves the city looking like a pile of rubble, while the government only makes announcements and trades blame,” said Abdul Wahab, a commuter.
Hamid, a resident of Gulshan-e-Iqbal, lamented that “roads are dug up and left unfinished, underpasses have turned into drains, and people’s lives have no value.”
