Flood threat escalates in Bahawalnagar as India releases water into Sutlej
Areas along the River Sutlej in Bahawalnagar have come under serious threat following heavy rains and the release of water by India.
According to sources, India has reported releasing water into the Sutlej River, notifying Pakistan through diplomatic channels, but not under the Indus Waters Treaty
India informed Pakistan through diplomatic channels, not under the Indus Waters Treaty, the sources added.
In the past, the Indian Water Commission used to provide direct information.
Pakistani authorities informed the Indus Water Commission about the Indian information, which issued alerts to the relevant agencies about possible floods.
The sources said that India also reported releasing water into the Tawi River, and water flow at the Harike Barrage has increased. Authorities have issued a high flood alert downstream of Harike.
According to officials, the water levels in the Sutlej River and its tributaries are expected to rise significantly.
Following torrential rains and India’s water release, areas adjacent to the Sutlej River in Bahawalnagar have come under severe threat.
Flooding has also caused land erosion at many places.
Hundreds of acres of crops have been washed away by floodwaters in Punjab, causing distress to many farmers.
While district administration and rescue teams have launched relief operations, the rapid rise in water levels is worsening the situation.
Local people have urged authorities to take immediate action and reinforce protective embankments to prevent further loss of life and property.
