Hungarian and Slovak officials have warned that Russian oil supplies to their countries could be suspended for at least five days following Ukrainian strike on a facility in Russia.

The development highlights the escalating impact of Russia’s war in Ukraine on energy infrastructure.

In recent weeks, both Russia and Ukraine have intensified attacks on each other’s energy resourcesm targeting heating supplies in Ukraine and the Druzhba pipeline in Russia. This surge in hostilities comes as US President Donald Trump continues to advocate for a resolution to the conflict.

Since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the European Union has been working to reduce energy imports from Russia, aiming to phase out Russian oil and gas by the end of 2027. Despite this, Slovakia and Hungary have maintained relations with Russian President Vladimir Putin and have opposed sanctions against Russia.

On Friday, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban released a letter he sent to Trump, Stating that Ukraine attacked the Druzhba pipeline just days before Trump’s meeting with Putin in Alaska on August 15. Orban described the attack as a “very unfortunate move”.

A photocopy of the letter shared on Facebook included a handwritten note from Trump expressing his anger over the situation.

Hungary’s and Slovakia’s foreign minister have reached out to the European Commission, warning that the recent Ukrainian strike could disrupt their Russian oil imports for at least 5 days and urging the EU to ensure the security of their energy supplies.

The EU has invested in alternative energy infrastructure in Croatia to provide these countries with other supply options. With the Russian energy ministry did not comment on the situation, a source within the industry noted that supplies could indeed be halted temporarily.

The Ukrainian strike marks the second instance this week of reduced Russian oil supplies to Hungary and Slovakia, following interruptions earlier in the week.

Ukraine’s military confirmed it targeted the Unecha oil pumping station, a key component of Russia’s oil pipeline to Europe.
