7.5 magnitude earthquake triggers tsunami alert in Drake Passage
A powerful earthquake of magnitude 7.5 hit the Drake passage. The body of water located between South America’s southern tip and Antartica.
Following this seismic event, Chile’s Navy Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service issued a tsunami precaution for the Chilean Antarctic territory.
This warning came after an earlier earthquake on Wednesday evening, initially reported at a magnitude of 8.0 and later revised by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) to 7.5.
The earthquake occurred 258km (160 miles ) northwest of Base Frei, at a depth of 11km (7miles).
The tremor stuck over 700km southeast of Ushauasia, Argentina’s southernmost city, which has a population of approximately 57,000.
