A video statement has emerged of Dr Usman Qazi, a professor at BUITEMS in Quetta, in which he admitted to being affiliated with the banned Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) and facilitating several terrorist activities.

Security sources had earlier said that law enforcement agencies had received intelligence in the last week of July that terrorists from the banned organisation Fitna-ul-Hindustan were planning to carry out terrorist attacks in various districts of the province, including Quetta, from early August.

Law enforcement agencies devised a strategy and carried out operations to arrest terrorists and foil these plans.

On August 11, law enforcement agencies arrested a suicide bomber in Quetta, who, during interrogation, revealed that he had been prepared for the suicide attack by Dr Usman Qazi, a professor at BUITEMS.

Acting on the information, security forces raided a location in Afnan Town and arrested Dr Qazi.

In his confessional statement, Dr Usman Qazi said that he used the Telegram app for coordinating terrorist activities and receiving instructions from Harbiyar, a BLA leader.

“I betrayed the state,” Qazi confessed. “I facilitated acts of terrorism. I am ashamed of betraying my country.”

Dr Usman Qazi revealed that he belonged to Turbat, grew up there and later pursued education at top institutions in the country.

At the time of his arrest, he was serving as a Grade-18 lecturer at BUITEMS in Quetta.

Usman Qazi said that when he was pursuing his PhD at Peshawar University, he visited Quaid-e-Azam University, where he met three friends who were affiliated with the banned outfit.

Later, two of them were killed, but one, Dr Hebtan alias Kalak, contacted him. Later, he was also inducted into the organisation.

Qazi said he maintained contact with several terrorists and communicated directly with BLA chief Bashir Zeb via Telegram.

Upon returning to Quetta, Qazi said he was assigned three specific tasks by the group. He confessed that during this time, his friends helped him officially join the organisation, where he was given the codename Harf-e-Hameer.

According to Usman Qazi, the first task he was given was to provide a shelter in Quetta for BLA’s regional commander Sher Dil, who had come from Kalat for treatment after being injured.

Then, in November last year, Usman Qazi gave refuge to Rafiq Bizenjo, who stayed at his house for two nights before being handed over to another contact. The next day, Bizenjo blew himself up at Quetta railway station, killing innocent civilians.

Usman Qazi said that he recently received another target. A person stayed with him for a few days.

After that, Qazi handed him over to Jamil alias Najeeb. The organisation intended to use that person in a terror attack on August 14.

Dr Usman Qazi said that he also procured a pistol and gave it to a woman who passed it on to a BLA squad. The weapon was later used to target security personnel and government employees.

Dr Qazi confessed that he did all these things – he was associated with the banned organisation, and acted as a facilitator.

Qazi confessed that the state gave him everything – honour and dignity.

“It gave me a job and ä job to my wife. Despite this, I betrayed the state. I am deeply ashamed of it. I regret it. The purpose of recording this video statement is to tell the younger generation to stay away from such organisations that spread chaos,” he added.
