NDMA warns of intensifying rains till August 22

Three rain systems are moving towards Pakistan: NDMA

The current spell of rains is expected to continue till August 22 with further intensification likely, NDMA’s technical expert Tayyab Shah has said.

According to him, another monsoon system is set to begin after August 22, while three more weather systems are moving towards Pakistan.

One system is moving from the Bay of Bengal and another from Afghanistan’s Nangarhar and Kandahar regions, he said, adding that northern areas and several regions of Punjab are at serious risk.

NDMA’s General Manager Zara Hassan said that heavy rains are likely in the next 24 to 48 hours. She warned that the Tarbela Dam is currently 98 per cent full and water levels could rise to dangerous levels.

According to Zara Hassan, the water level in Katarian and Gowalmandi has risen to 15 feet.

Rains continue in areas along Koh-e-Sulaiman, while the risk of flooding has increased in Neelum, Poonch and Bagh.

In addition, Peshawar, Chitral, Dir and Charsadda are also facing severe risks, she added.

NDMA’s member operations Brigadier Kamran said that preparations for the monsoon began in February 2025, and preventive measures were taken in collaboration with provincial governments.

He said that the devastation in Buner and Bajaur was caused by cloudbursts. In the last two days, 337 people have lost their lives, while 178 have been injured.

According to Brigadier Kamran, rescue resources have been provided through the army and FC, and a second batch of federal relief goods will be dispatched soon.

NDMA chairman Lt-General Inam Haider said that due to unusual heat, the monsoon’s intensity has increased.

He also confirmed reports of flash floods and tourist accidents in Gilgit-Baltistan.

He said that the monsoon spell will continue till the first 10 days of September.

Inam Haider said that damage assessment surveys will be conducted, and restoration of communication infrastructure will be prioritised.

According to the NDMA chairman, relief packages will be delivered to districts with high casualties, adding that the search for missing persons is ongoing.

He said that all these losses are part of climate change, adding that collective efforts are needed to address these challenges.

The NDMA chairman said infrastructure restoration will be carried out in collaboration with the Ministry of Communications.

In the next two weeks, our focus will be on Azad Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan, he stated.

Inam Haider stressed the importance of an early warning system in reducing disaster impact.
