A British student of Pakistani descent, Mahnoor Cheema, has achieved a remarkable milestone by securing 24 A grades in her A-Level examinations, marking the highest number ever awarded to a single student globally.

This extraordinary accomplishment has earned her a place at Exeter College, University of Oxford, where she is set to begin her medicine degree in October.

Mahnoor described the offer as “a dream come true” and expressed her excitement about starting this new chapter of her academic journey.

Her father, Barrister Usman Cheema, praised Mahnoor’s dedication and passion, highlighting that her achievement not only sets four world records but also serves as an inspiration for aspiring students around the world.

Earlier in 2023, Mahnoor made headlines by passing an impressive total of 34 subjects at the General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) level. She achieved A* grades in 17 subjects as a private candidate in Year 10, and recently added 17 more subjects, establishing an unprecedented record both in the UK and internationally.

Meanwhile, the proportion of A-level entries awarded top grades has increased, although exam boards warn that regional inequalities are worsening.

Students across England, Wales, and Northern Ireland received their A-level, T-level, and BTEC results, with many learning if they secured places at universities, which have accepted a record number of students this year.

According to the Joint Council for Qualifications (JCQ), 28.3% of A-levels in the UK were awarded an A or A* grade, reflecting a 0.5 percentage point increase from last year’s 27.8%.
