YouTube to test age verification technology through AI
YouTube announced on Wednesday that it will begin testing a new age-verification system in the United States, utilizing artificial intelligence to distinguish between adults and minors based on their viewing habits.
Initially, the tests will only impact a small segment of YouTube’s U.S. audience, but they could expand if the system proves effective in accurately assessing viewers’ ages, as it has in other regions. The verification process will only function for users who are logged into their accounts, bypassing any birth date information provided during sign-up.
If the system identifies a logged-in user as under 18, YouTube will implement standard restrictions designed to protect minors from accessing inappropriate content. These measures include reminders to take breaks from screens, privacy warnings, and limited video recommendations, along with the absence of personalized ads for users under 18.
In cases where the system incorrectly labels a user as a minor, they can correct the error by submitting a government-issued ID, credit card, or a selfie for verification.
James Beser, YouTube’s director of product management, emphasized the platform’s commitment to youth safety, stating, “YouTube was one of the first platforms to offer experiences designed specifically for young people, and we’re proud to again be at the forefront of introducing technology that allows us to deliver safety protections while preserving teen privacy.”
Users will still have the option to watch YouTube videos without logging into an account, though this will automatically block access to certain content without age verification.
