PM warns India of ‘decisive response’ over water blockade threats
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday warned India that any attempt to block Pakistan’s water in violation of the Indus Waters Treaty would draw a firm and decisive response.
“You threaten to stop our water. If you attempt such a move, Pakistan will teach you a lesson you will never forget,” he said while addressing an event marking International Youth Day.
Calling water a “lifeline” for Pakistan, the prime minister vowed that no compromise would be made on the country’s rights under international agreements.
He said that a “new Pakistan” had emerged after May 10, when the armed forces “defeated India” and the Pakistan Air Force shot down six Indian fighter jets — sinking India’s arrogance.
The prime minister announced that 100,000 laptops would be distributed to students on an interest-free and merit basis, underlining his government’s commitment to transparency in youth empowerment programmes.
“The country’s future is in the hands of youth,” he added, pledging continued investment in education and technology.
PM Shehbaz also congratulated the nation on Independence Day and lauded the role of minorities and all segments of society in Pakistan’s creation and development.
Minister for Religious Affairs and Interfaith Harmony Sardar Muhammad Yousaf said the government was ensuring a 5% job quota for minorities as part of a policy to promote interfaith harmony.
Minister of State for Religious Affairs Khel Das Kohistani reiterated that Islam and the Constitution protect the rights of all citizens, regardless of faith.
Chairman PM Youth Programme Rana Mashhood Khan highlighted that Pakistan’s first youth policy was introduced in 2011 by Shehbaz Sharif as chief minister, leading to initiatives like laptop distribution, scholarships, and education endowments benefiting students nationwide.
