The decision to launch an operation against militants in the Bajaur and Khyber districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa was taken after talks between a Jirga comprising tribal elders and militants failed, sources said on Tuesday.

The sources also confirmed the presence of around 800 terrorists in the area.

The jirga had made three main demands, including that the militants vacate the area. However, the Fitna Al Khawarij (TTP) flatly refused to leave the area.

According to the official sources, about 300 terrorists are present in two areas of Mamond tehsil of Bajaur, while more than 350 militants are active in Khyber.

Over 80 per cent of these militants are Afghan nationals.

Mamond has a population of over 300,000, and so far, more than 40,000 people have fled their homes to avoid clashes.

Malakand Division Commissioner Abid Wazir told Aaj News that arrangements to provide shelter to the displaced people have been completed.

Displaced people are being accommodated in 107 government buildings in Khar, and a tent village is being set up in the Khar Sports Complex.

He stated that all basic facilities will be provided to displaced families.

KP cabinet approves relief package

The KP cabinet, in its latest meeting, endorsed targeted operations and approved a relief package for those displaced.

Each affected family in Bajaur will receive Rs50,000 in financial assistance, with an additional Rs25,000 upon return. The provincial government has allocated Rs 100 million to the Bajaur deputy commissioner to meet victims’ immediate needs and directed that all basic facilities be provided.

The provincial home department issued a notification imposing a complete curfew in several Bajaur localities from 11:00 am on August 11 to 11:00 am on August 14, including Lagari, Gwati, Ghanam Shah, Bad Siah, Kamar, Amanta, Zagai, Gat, Ghandai, Garigal, Naiq Killi, Regai, Dag, Damadola, Sultan Beg, Chotra, Shen Kot, Gang, Jawar, Inam Khoro, Chingai, Anga, Safari, Bar Gatkai, Kharki, Shakro and Bagro.

Residents were instructed to complete all essential tasks before the curfew and remain indoors during the operation.

Authorities warned that violators would be held responsible for any consequences.

Many families have already moved to safer areas ahead of the security push, while others are being relocated to government camps.
