Pakistan defeated the West Indies by five wickets in the first ODI played in Trinidad, taking a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

Batting first, the home team was bowled out for 280 runs, with Shaheen Shah Afridi taking four wickets, while Naseem Shah took three wickets.

Chasing a 281-run target, the Pakistani team reached home in the 49th over.

Debutant Hassan Nawaz scored a brilliant half-century and remained unbeaten on 63 runs off 54 balls. His innings included five fours and three towering sixes.

After five wickets fell, Hassan Nawaz and Hussain Talat put on a responsible partnership, adding 100 runs for the fifth wicket.

Hussain Talat remained unbeaten on 41, while captain Muhammad Rizwan scored 53, Babar Azam 47, Abdullah Shafiq 29, Salman Ali Agha 23 and opener Saim Ayub could only score five runs.

The second ODI will be played on Sunday.
