The Punjab Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) on Friday issued a flood alert for the Sutlej River and adjoining streams, warning of possible high water flow due to fresh monsoon rains starting August 13.

According to a PDMA spokesperson, the upcoming spell could raise water levels in the Sutlej, with further increase possible from the release of water from upstream reservoirs. The new system is expected to impact the upper parts of the country from August 13.

Director General PDMA Irfan Ali Kathia said there is concern over rising water levels at Ganda Singh, noting that last week Indian dams recorded unusual increases. Bhakra Dam is currently 61% full, Pong Dam at 76%, and Thein Dam at 64%.

PDMA Punjab said the Indus River System Authority (IRSA) and the Irrigation Department are monitoring river flows round the clock. Commissioners and deputy commissioners across the province have been put on alert.

Relief Commissioner Punjab Nabeel Javed has also directed the local government, agriculture, irrigation, health, forestry, livestock, and transport departments to remain on high alert.
