Punjab to launch Pakistan’s first ‘Super Autonomous Rapid Transport’ system
The government of Punjab has decided to launch Pakistan’s first Urban Super Autonomous Rapid Transport (SART) system on Lahore’s Canal Road from August 14.
The electric tram system will be capable of accommodating up to 320 passengers at a time.
For the past seven years, there has been no public transport available on the busy Canal Road, forcing commuters to rely heavily on motorcycle rickshaws, which were contributing to environmental pollution.
To address both the transportation and environmental challenges, the Punjab Transport Department has approved the Urban Electric Tram project.
A successful test run of the Yellow Line SART has already been conducted, generating a wave of excitement among citizens.
The trackless electric tram will operate along a 31-kilometre route from Thokar Niaz Baig to Jallo Park, running on the side lanes of the main road.
The tram consists of three interconnected segments and can travel up to 40 kilometres on a single charge.
