Property tycoon Malik Riaz has hinted at a possible shutdown of Bahria Town operations across Pakistan, citing what he calls sustained pressure and actions by government institutions that have “crippled” the company’s ability to function.

In a post on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Riaz claimed that Bahria Town’s operations have been severely affected in recent months due to government-led crackdowns.

He alleged that dozens of staff members have been arrested, company accounts frozen, and vehicles confiscated, bringing cash flow to a standstill and daily services to a halt.

“We are now unable to pay the salaries of tens of thousands of our staff,” Riaz said, warning that the situation has escalated to a point where a complete nationwide shutdown of Bahria Town operations is being considered.

However, he called this a “last resort” and expressed a willingness to step back if conditions improve.

Riaz said the company’s core infrastructure — comprising 50,000 employees — has been paralysed, with senior staff missing, services suspended, development projects stalled, and basic community maintenance in disarray.

He stressed that the ongoing crisis is not just a blow to Bahria Town, but poses a serious risk to the national economy, claiming that billions in investments by millions of Pakistanis from Karachi to Lahore and Islamabad are now frozen, and hundreds of billions worth of commercial projects are at a standstill.

“Thousands of families are suffering from uncertainty and mental stress,” he added.

“To our residents and stakeholders, we extend heartfelt apologies for the difficulties caused by circumstances beyond our control.”

Despite the turmoil, Riaz reaffirmed his commitment to Pakistan, calling his love, loyalty, and service for the country “unchanged.”

He highlighted Bahria Town’s contributions over the past two decades, including the establishment of modern housing societies, job creation, and substantial tax contributions.

He appealed for serious dialogue and a dignified resolution, offering to participate in any arbitration process and fully abide by its verdict.

“If the outcome requires us to make payments, we will ensure compliance,” he said.

Concluding his message, Riaz said he and his organisation are prepared to sacrifice “everything” for the people and institutions of Pakistan.

“We want to continue serving the nation, not exit silently under such circumstances,” he said.
