Karachi police introduce camera based traffic fines to enhance road safety
Karachi Traffic police is set to replace the manual method of traffic monitoring through constables with a new camera based traffic fine system.
This system, known as TRACS (Traffic Regulation and Citation System), instead of stopping vehicles on the spot, will detect common offences like speeding, signal jumping and illegal parking.
It will generate an e-ticket with photographic evidence. The initiative is currently in its awareness stage, with no official launch date confirmed yet. Police are asking the public to follow traffic rules strictly.
According to police, this “faceless” method will reduce corruption, eliminate arguments with wardens, and it will also ensure to send visuals with the current time stamped to the violator’s home.
The police further said that drivers will receive their challan (e-ticket) by mail, along with the photo of the violation. A 50% fine will be offered if paid within 15days.
However, charges will multiply if the challan remains unpaid till 21days. After 3months, the driver’s licence will be suspended. After 6months, their CNIC will be blocked.
The modification in the traffic monitoring system is aimed at improving traffic discipline and road safety while reducing direct contact between police and motorists.
Authorities cautioned drivers that their vehicles are now monitored by cameras installed at major intersections and roads throughout Karachi.
The new approach aligns with global trends where cities rely on AI and automated surveillance to manage urban traffic and enforce road laws effectively.
Earlier, e-challan ticketing was introduced in Lahore in 2022, it was initially launched as a pilot project in the busiest artery of provincial capital.
