Turkiye will commence the export of natural gas from Azerbaijan to Syria, as announced by Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar, on Saturday.

This initiative aligns with the efforts of Syria’s Islamist authorities, who overthrew Bashar Assad in December. Their aim is to rebuild the country’s infrastructure and economy after 14 years of civil war.

The ongoing conflict has damaged Syria’s powerful infrastructure, leading to electricity outages that can last more than 20hours each day.

Bayrakhtar revealed that the gas will be transported from Azerbaijan to Aleppo via Kilis, a province situated in Southern Turkiye near Syrian border.

In May, Syrian energy Minister Mohammad Al-Bashir confirmed that a deal has been established between Damascus and Ankara for Turkiye to supply natural gas through a northern pipeline.

Azerbaijan, known for its abundant gas resources. It has historically been a closed ally of Turkiye, also has been a close ally of Turkiye.

It continues to maintain strong relations with the Syrian transitional government.
