Monsoon: Punjab faces flood threat as PDMA warns of rise in river levels
Monsoon rains in Punjab and melting of glaciers in the northern areas have increased the flow of rivers.
According to a spokesperson for the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), flood conditions have arisen at various places along the Indus River.
Currently, low-level flooding in the Indus River at Tarbela, Kalabagh and Chashma has been noticed. On the other hand, moderate flood has been recorded at Taunsa. In Tarbela, water inflow is 309,000 cusecs while outflow is 266,000 cusecs, in Taunsa water inflow is 447,000 and outflow is 441,000 cusecs. In Kalabagh, water inflow is 300,000 and outflow is 293,000 cusecs, while inflow is 372,000 and outflow is 357,000 cusecs.
The PDMA stated that the water flow in the Chenab, Ravi, Jhelum and Sutlej rivers is currently normal. However, due to continuous rains, there is a risk of flooding in major rivers and adjacent streams.
Also, the water flow in the rivers of Dera Ghazi Khan is currently normal.
However, according to the DG PDMA, the water level is likely to increase further in the next 24 hours.
Relief Commissioner Punjab Nabeel Javed has issued instructions to the concerned administration to remain alert and ensure safety measures.
The public has been appealed to take precautionary measures during the rainy season, especially to avoid bathing in rivers, canals and streams to avoid any possible accident.
