Why artificial intelligence cannot be fully relied upon
The rapidly growing use of artificial intelligence (AI) in every sector is now under question.
A recent experiment has revealed that if not used properly, this technology can become a tool for spreading lies, hate speech, and misleading people with fake news.
The experiment, which involved billionaire Elon Musk’s chatbot ‘Grok’, has raised pertinent questions.
Until a few days ago, Grok was able to recognise and reject false claims. However, after some changes were made to its system, it started saying dangerous things.
For example, Grok praised Nazi leader Hitler, spoke against Jews, and justified political violence in the United States.
Experts have warned that if those controlling artificial intelligence want to, they can manipulate these chatbots to suit their political or personal views.
Elon Musk’s change has made it clear that such systems can be used to promote a particular ideology or propaganda.
The report says that these systems often allow lies to be considered truth, because they operate on the basis of public opinion or content on the Internet, even if that content is false.
Researchers maintain that countries like Russia are taking advantage of this and misleading chatbots by putting false information on the Internet.
One study found that 7 out of 10 chatbots accepted a Russian fake news story as true.
Moreover, reserachers point out, chatbots often fail to recognise the original source of news and spread information without research, which can be misleading to the general public.
Although these systems have flaws, experts believe that if used carefully, they can be a useful tool for research, analysis, and learning.
Experts warn that while artificial intelligence is a powerful tool, trusting it blindly can be dangerous.
It still takes human intelligence, journalism, and research to find the truth. Otherwise, there may come a time when whatever a chatbot tells you seems true… even if it’s a complete lie.
