Lahore’s old buildings become ticking time bombs during heavy rains
Hundreds of lives are at risk as the people continue to reside in 96 dangerously dilapidated buildings in Lahore despite the warnings and official notices issued by the authorities.
Located in various areas including the Fleming Road, Ravi Road, Mochi Gate, and Garhi Shahu, and others, old, weakened and vulnerable structures are still home to the hundreds of families, which has raised the fears of collapse during the monsoon season’s heavy rainfall and strong winds.
These structures are highly vulnerable to severe weather conditions that put the lives of their residents at risk.
In several cases, signs reading “Available for Rent” remain posted outside these hazardous buildings, further highlighting the lack of awareness or concern among some property owners.
Most residents have refused to leave due to the lack of resources, finances and alternate housing options.
Recent forecasts of 40% higher-than-average monsoon rainfall in Lahore have now become an alarming situation that could bring devastation.
The Data Ganj Bakhsh Zone is among the worst affected, with over 42 buildings categorised as dangerous.
Many structures show visible cracks and serious structural weaknesses, and in some cases, the district administration has only partially demolished unsafe buildings, leaving portions still standing and occupied.
According to the Director of Building Control at the Walled City Authority, the collapse of even a few of these buildings could result in a major tragedy. “Urgent action is required to prevent loss of life,” the official warned.
Authorities continue to urge residents to relocate for their safety, but without adequate support or resettlement plans, many families remain trapped in life-threatening living conditions.
