Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has categorically rejected rumours suggesting that President Asif Ali Zardari might be asked to resign or that Field Marshal Asim Munir harbours ambitions to assume the presidency.

According to a report published in a private English-language newspaper, the prime minister dismissed these claims as mere speculation, emphasizing that there is no truth to them.

“Field Marshal Asim Munir has never expressed any desire to become president, nor is there any such plan under consideration,” the prime minister is quoted as saying in the report.

He went on to underscore that his relationship with President Zardari and the army chief is rooted in mutual respect and a shared commitment to Pakistan’s progress and prosperity.

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi had earlier echoed similar sentiments in a statement posted on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), labeling the reports as part of a “malicious campaign” aimed at creating discord among the country’s leadership.

“We know very well who is behind this campaign,” Naqvi said, adding, “There has been no discussion, nor is there any intention, to seek the president’s resignation or entertain any presidential ambitions by the army chief.”

Naqvi further alleged that foreign hostile elements were playing a role in spreading this negative narrative.

“Those working with enemy agencies can do as they please, but we will do whatever it takes to strengthen Pakistan once again, Insha’Allah,” he asserted.

Senate Chairman and former prime minister Yousaf Raza Gilani also weighed in, dismissing the rumors as “baseless propaganda.”
