The Sindh High Court on Thursday granted bail to acclaimed filmmaker and writer Jamshed Mehmood, widely known as Jami, while hearing his appeal challenging his conviction.

The court also suspended his sentence pending further proceedings.

The bench directed Jami to furnish surety bonds worth Rs50,000 to secure his release from prison the same day.

Jami’s counsel, Advocate Hafiz Muhammad, described the decision as a significant relief for his client.

Earlier, an Additional District and Sessions Judge had sentenced Jami to two years in jail and imposed a fine in a case initiated through a direct complaint by film and music director Sohail Javed.

In his appeal, Jami maintained that the allegations against him were false and baseless, arguing that the offence was bailable and that the trial court had failed to comply with due legal process.

The appeal requested that the conviction be overturned.

The court adjourned the hearing, with proceedings set to continue on the next scheduled date.
