Pakistani films ‘Nayab’, ‘Deemak’ win awards at SCO Film Festival in China

Pakistani movies, including “Nayab” and “Deemak,” have bagged awards at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Film Festival in China.

In an Instagram post, the director Umar Nasir Ali, stated that “NAYAB wins Jury Special Award at SCO Film Festival Chinqong CHINA. Out of 19 films in competition from Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) member states: China, Russia, India, Pakistan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan, Nayab was honored with the Jury Special Award.”

“To receive this recognition on such a major multilateral platform feels deeply personal and profoundly national.”

He expressed that the festival extended beyond just cinema, serving as a platform for diplomacy and people-to-people connections.

Also, he noted that receiving an award there was not only an honour but also a responsibility.

Ali revealed thay such recognition reflected not just on the filmmaker, but also on the stories of their country, the voices it amplified, and the talent it showcased.

“This is a proud and emotional moment for Pakistani cinema. Thank you to every single person who has been part of Nayab’s journey.”

He expressed gratitude towards people included in film’s journey, Ministry of Information and EDG DEMP Sameena Farzeen.

In an another Instagram post, “Deemak” movie’s director Rafay Rashdi stated that “When #Deemak took home Best Editing at the SCO Film Festival and the moment said it all.”

“A historic win for Pakistani cinema on an international stage.”

Nayab is about a determined young woman dreams of shattering stereotypes to play cricket for Pakistan’s national team. Her brother, once a rising star himself, grapples with his past.

“Deemak” is a Pakistani horror film inspired by true events, based on paranormal activity experienced by family, leading towards conflict between daughter-in-law and mother-in-law.
