Lyari building collapse leaves rickshaw drivers, residents stranded
Hardships persist for rickshaw drivers and residents grappling with the aftermath of a residential building collapse in Lyari’s Baghdadi area.
After a 60-hour operation, rescue teams have wrapped up efforts at the site, but several rickshaws remain buried still intact under the debris.
Frustrated drivers have staged protests over the authorities’ refusal to allow them to retrieve their vehicles.
According to the drivers, their rickshaws were parked in the building’s basement and could still be recovered. “The roof is gone, and now my livelihood will also be taken away,” one rickshaw driver lamented.
“Just give us a little time to remove our rickshaws. If more buildings collapse, everything we have will be lost.”
Authorities have also declared the surrounding structures unsafe, prompting evacuations of multiple nearby buildings.
As a result, dozens of families have been forced to spend nights on the streets without shelter.
Affected residents have demanded that they be provided alternative accommodation before any further demolition is carried out. “We have been living under the open sky for two days,” one resident complained. “If we don’t get a place to stay within 24 hours, we will start protesting.”
