Murad Ali Shah: Security alert hampered rescue efforts in Karachi’s Lyari building tragedy

Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah on Sunday voiced deep sorrow over the deadly collapse of a residential building in Karachi’s Lyari, acknowledging that an earlier security threat delayed the government’s full response.
Speaking to reporters, the Chief Minister confirmed that the death toll has climbed to 26, with rescue efforts expected to conclude soon. He emphasized that all relevant agencies are now fully mobilized to carry out rescue and relief efforts.
He stressed that saving lives remained the top priority, with emergency teams working through the night to rescue people trapped beneath the rubble.
Murad Ali Shah disclosed that more than 480 buildings in Karachi’s old city area have been declared dangerous. He said the government is working to provide alternative housing to residents to avert further tragedies.
He stated that another unsafe building was evacuated overnight as a precautionary measure. The Chief Minister pledged strict action against those responsible for the collapse, including individuals involved in unauthorized construction.
He added that a high-level meeting will be held on Monday to finalize a comprehensive plan to address the issue of hazardous structures across the city.
Discussing preparations for Muharram, Murad Ali Shah said that maintaining public safety and law and order are the government’s foremost priorities. He announced that extensive security arrangements have been implemented along procession routes, with police, Rangers, and other law enforcement agencies on high alert.
He further stated that Muharram processions in Karachi are under constant surveillance via CCTV cameras and drones to ensure security. Over 50,000 police personnel have been deployed for this purpose.
The Chief Minister urged all communities to observe Muharram with unity, patience, and respect, and to support the government in promoting peace.
He also noted that consultations with religious scholars were underway to foster harmony during the holy month.
