Pakistan brace for heavy monsoon rain until July 10
A new wave of monsoon rains has set in across Pakistan, with the Meteorological Department predicting intermittent heavy showers through July 10.
The downpours have already drenched parts of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, leading the NDMA to issue a high alert over the risk of flash flooding and landslides.
According to official data, Cherat in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa recorded the highest rainfall at 98mm, followed by 33mm in Faisalabad and 28mm in Chakwal. In Karak, a 12-year-old boy tragically lost his life after being swept away by floodwaters following heavy rain in seasonal streams.
The Met Office stated that the current weather system will continue to affect various regions of the country until July 10, bringing thunderstorms and rain to Islamabad. Karachi is expected to receive light showers over the next two days, while another rain system is anticipated to begin on July 8.
The NDMA has warned of increased water flow in the Kabul River at Nowshera and the possibility of low-level flooding at Tarbela Dam.
Authorities have also cautioned about landslide risks in Galiyat, Murree, and Kashmir, as well as potential glacial lake outburst floods in Gilgit-Baltistan and upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Additionally, the NDMA has highlighted the risk of urban flooding in low-lying areas of upper and central Sindh.
Citizens are urged to remain vigilant, follow safety precautions, and coordinate with local authorities and rescue services in case of emergencies.
