PHC criticizes officials over delayed rescue in Swat tragedy
The Peshawar High Court has voiced strong dissatisfaction with the performance of relevant departments in the wake of the Swat tragedy, questioning their failure to rescue tourists in time and to enforce safety measures along riverbanks.
Chief Justice S.M. Atiq Shah and Justice Faheem Wali heard the petition related to the incident.
During the proceedings, the Chief Justice pressed the Advocate General to specify which department bore responsibility for the loss of life and whether any practical measures had been taken to protect people and property.
The bench also asked whether any safety directives had been issued and, if so, whether they had been properly implemented.
The Advocate General informed the court that multiple officials had been suspended and an inquiry committee established, but he was unable to confirm whether safety orders had been acted upon.
“Do you realize that precious human lives are being lost on the Indus highways?” the Chief Justice remarked.
The court summoned the Commissioners of Malakand, Hazara, Kohat, and Bannu divisions, as well as the Regional Police Officers and other concerned officials, instructing them to appear fully prepared at the next hearing.
Chief Justice Atiq Shah noted that such incidents stem from encroachments and illegal construction along rivers, yet the relevant authorities continue to demonstrate an indifferent approach.
On the Advocate General’s request, the hearing was adjourned until tomorrow. The court warned that if no progress is shown at the next session, strict legal action will be taken against those responsible.
