Pakistan assumes UN Security Council presidency for July, vows to foster unity
Pakistan on Tuesday announced that it has assumed the presidency of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the month of July, expressing its intent to work closely with all member states to ensure unified and timely responses to global challenges.
In an official statement, the Foreign Office said Pakistan takes on this role with “a deep sense of purpose, humility, and conviction.” It emphasized that Pakistan’s leadership at the Council will be guided by the core principles of the UN Charter, respect for international law, and a strong commitment to multilateral diplomacy.
“As a country that has consistently advocated dialogue and diplomacy, Pakistan brings to the Security Council an objective, principled and balanced perspective shaped by its foreign policy, past experience at the Council and its long-standing contributions to the maintenance of international peace and security including through UN peacekeeping and peace-building efforts,” the statement said.
Pakistan, in its statement on Tuesday, emphasized its commitment to a transparent, balanced, and consultative approach as it assumed the presidency of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for July. The Foreign Office highlighted that Pakistan remains aware of the complex and interconnected challenges to global peace and security spanning regions such as the Middle East, South Asia, Africa, Europe, and Latin America.
Noting the severe human toll of ongoing crises around the world, the statement stressed the need for a Security Council that is responsive, credible, and effective in addressing global conflicts.
As part of its agenda during its presidency, Pakistan will host two high-level signature events. On July 22, the UNSC will hold an open debate titled “Promoting International Peace and Security through Multilateralism and the Peaceful Settlement of Disputes.”
Additionally, on July 24, a briefing will be held on the theme “Cooperation between the United Nations and Regional and Sub-Regional Organizations: The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).”
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar will chair these sessions. He will also preside over the quarterly open debate on the Question of Palestine scheduled for July 23, 2025.
